After completing a succesful racing career including winning the National Championship in SCCA's Formula Vee in 1973 Reeves Callaway what other race drivers did he went to work as a racing instructor. In his spare time he worked on a turbo system for a BMW 320i which was completed in 1977 and received rave reviews from Car and Driver magazine. The report also mentioned that Callaway was set to deliver turbo kits to BMW models. Although this was a gross exaggeration Callaway was almost forced to set up a workshop in his garage and asked his friends and neighbors to work for him. Callaway Turbosystems became a household name almost instantly in tuning circles. He found his dream machine in the form of the Chevrolet Corvette. Among the numerous variations he offered probably the best known is the Sledgehammer created in 1988 to show the world it is possible to build a Corvette with all the creature-comforts and a max speed of over 400 km/h (250 mph)! Among the Callaway project cars which include the C3 Alfa Romeo TwinTurbo GTV6 and C5 Aston Martin Virage the most recent is the C12 introduced in 1998. It is a limited-edition sportscar built on Corvette C5 mechanics.
