Auto -- > Connaught - Type-D GT Syracuse

The production version of the Connaught Type-D GT Syracuse will be introduced at England's Autosport International Show this January, according to an article in Edmunds Inside Line.

The limited-production front-engine 2+2 is powered by a supercharged 300-hp 2.0-liter V10. The car's lightweight composite, stainless-steel, and aluminum construction is said to allow a top speed of 170 mph with sub 5-second 0-60 mph times.

Production of the Type-D GT Syracuse begins in May 2006. The run will be limited to 100 cars. Prices will start at about $100,000.

Connaught hopes to build a line of different models based on the Type-D coupe. Press reports say the next variant of this design will be a gas-electric hybrid model aimed at strong performance with fuel economy in the 40-mpg range.

Connaught

The Connaught name has its origins in 1950s open-wheel competition. After producing a series of F2 machines, the company reached its zenith in 1955 when driver Tony Brooks won the Syracuse Grand Prix in a Connaught (hence the "Syracuse" label for the new Type-D). Unfortunately, Connaught ran short of funding and closed in 1957.

Today's incarnation of the storied British name is the product of ex-Jaguar consultant engineers Tim Bishop and Tony Martindale, who met while working on Jaguar's X-type program.

Having purchased the long-dormant name, Bishop and Martindale set up the new Connaught Motor Company in Daventry, Northamptonshire, England. A virtual car company, Connaught will handle design, planning, and prototype engineering, but manufacturing will be outsourced to technology partner EPM.
