The de Tomaso Guarà is a sports car and the last project of the founder and owner Alejandro de Tomaso put into the market. Presented 1993 in Geneva, the Guarà was available as Coupé and open Barchetta. The latter corresponds to the coupe but without roof and proper windscreen. Just a small air deflector protects the passenger and the driver from the elements and it had to be driven using a helmet. The Guarà is based on the Maserati Barchetta Stradale prototype from 1991, a true race car from which a few conversions finally made it onto the public roads. The third model was the Guarà Spider, a convertible with a small canvas top, is very rare.

The first cars (mainly Coupés) were sold in 1994 and with some interruptions the Coupé and the Barchetta still can be ordered at the factory (prepayment required): in 2005 the Guarà is available in Italy, Austria and Switzerland.

Fibreglass, Kevlar, and other Composites make the body shell, fitted to a tubular frame. The suspension is true Formula 1 and IndyCar technology with independent upper and lower wishbone with pushrod front and read end suspension. The Guarà is known for its highly agile handling which makes it a bit too talkative to the normal driver.

First, the Guarà was built using technology and interior parts from BMW but later all cars came equipped with Ford/Visteon (Canada) parts and engines. All cars for the States were equipped with the Ford/Visteon from the beginning but sales into the States were ceased soon.

Depending on the source, 10 to 12 Barchetta, 5 Spider and about 50 Coupés were sold. The Spider was skipped when De Tomaso switched to the Ford engine which didn’t leave enough room for the canvas.

DeTomaso

In 1959 Alejandro De Tomaso, un innascut pilot Argentinian a fondat compania sa proprie de automobile. Utilajele pentru montaj erau situate in Albareto, o suburbie din Modena, citeva mile de uzina care se afla azi. Automobilele legendare, printre care Pantera au fost create in timpul urmatoarelor patru decade.

Din pacate, in 1993 Alejandro s-a imbolnavit serios si pentru a lasa compania sa supravietuiasca, fondatorul de Tomaso a trebuit sa renunte la controlul companiei Maserati si a faimosului producator de motociclete Guzzi.

O mica reducere cu Bruce Qvale, distribuitorul american a masinilor DeTomaso a dus la oprirea productiei Qvale Mangusta, dar DeTomaso s-a concentrat numai pe Guara si producea acestea intr-un numar mic.

S-a facut o colaborare cu Compania rusa UAZ in aprilie 2002 pentru a monta Simbir din toamna aceluiasi an. Productia presupunea 10 000 unitati din 2006 cand o noua uzina UAZ in Europa va fi operabila. Din 2004 productia UAZ nu a inceput si DeTomaso a fost lichidat. Guara poate fi inca comandat din uzina chiar dupa lichidare.
