Lista Masini -- > Hummer - H3

The Hummer H3 is a vehicle from General Motors' Hummer brand, introduced in 2005. The H3 is the smallest of the three Hummer models, and though the H3 concept car was a pickup truck, the final vehicle is a conventional SUV. Its GMT345 platform is based on the GMT355 which underpins the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks.

The H3 is built at GM's Shreveport, Louisiana factory. Export versions will also be produced at a GM facility in Struandale, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

In the American market, the H3 is priced from $29,500 to just under $40,000.

A review in the Boston Globe referred to its engine as having only "modest" horsepower and torque, having "reasonable" performance but "a bit sluggish passing uphill," and "certainly not for heavy towing or serious off-road driving."

The H3 uses the 3.5 L (3464 cc) Atlas straight-5 engine. This 20-valve DOHC unit produces 220 hp (164 kW) at 5600 rpm and 225 ft.lbf (305 Nm) at 2800 rpm. It is available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Its 111.9 in wheelbase is 1.1 in shorter than the GMT360 SUVs. It includes an electronically-controlled dual-speed transfer case and electronic locking differential.

Since it is rated at less than 8500 lb (GVWR), Hummer is required to provide official fuel economy ratings. It is rated at 16 mpg in the city cycle with both transmissions and 19 mpg with the automatic or 20 mpg with the manual on the highway. While the Hummer H2 will ford through 16 inches of water, the H3 will handle 24 inches of water. The H3 is the only vehicle in its class to have a 2-speed transfer case standard.

The 5.3 L Vortec 5300 V8 is expected to be added to the model for the 2007 model year, with a diesel added later.

Hummer

Hummer is a marque of vehicles sold by General Motors. For the military vehicles of which the trademark is based see HMMWV.

Hummers were traditionally built by AM General Corporation, formerly the heavy industries division of American Motors, in its Mishawaka, Indiana assembly plant. AM General had planned to sell a civilian version of the Hummer as far back as the late 1980s. In 1990, two matching white Hummers were driven from London, UK to Beijing, People's Republic of China over the rough roads of the central Soviet Union. The Hummers made the drive with ease, and highlights of this journey were broadcast on ESPN in the United States. The publicity would pale in comparison to the attention that the HMMWV received for its service in Operation: Desert Storm the following year.

In 1991, AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Hum-Vee) vehicle to the public under the brand name Hummer. In 1999, AM General sold the brand name to General Motors but continued to manufacture the vehicles, which GM then re-sold. In the next few years, GM introduced two new homegrown models, the H2 and H3, and renamed the original vehicle to H1. AM General continues to build the H1 and is contracted by GM to produce the H2. The H3 is built in Shreveport, LA.

As of 2004, Hummer has gone international with importers and distributors opened and elected in Europe and other selected markets. The sucess of Hummer internationally is yet to be known in large sales volumes, but celebrities and business people alike have brought Hummers around the world to cure their curosity. Markets such as Australia have taken interest to hummers with importers converting the latest H3 to right hand drive despite GM not officially selling the brand in Australia

From 2006, GM will be building/assembling the Hummer H3 at the Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa to make Hummers internationally available. Hummers at the Port Elizabeth plant will be built for local South African consumption and exports to Australia, the United Kingdom and Japan.
