The Demio was redesigned in 2002 on the DY platform. The Demio name continued in Japan, while the rest of the world dropped Demio and other names in favor of Mazda2. The badge-engineered Ford version is no longer made, as Ford began importing the Fiesta into Japan. In some European markets, Germany for example, it is also sold as Ford Fusion with slightly different head- and taillights. It is based on Ford's Fiesta on the Global Ford B3 platform which is based on Mazda's DY platform. The car is produced for Europe at a Ford plant in Valencia, Spain. North American sales of the Mazda2 are expected to start in 2007.

All Demios come with ABS and EBD, and stability control is optional. An innovative feature offered in Japan is e-4WD, a hybrid car-type system which uses an electric motor to power the rear wheels of this front wheel drive vehicle when needed. In the Demio, this system is used only as a traction aid, not for increased fuel economy as in most other vehicles.

Mazda
Mazda Motor Corporation este o companie producatoare de automobile din Japonia, cu sediul in Hiroshima.

Mazda si-a inceput activitatea ca Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. in anul 1920. Toyo Kogyo a venit in lumea automobilistica cu introducerea pe piata a modelului Mazda-Go in 1931, un automobil pe 3 roti, de asemenea ei produceau arme pentru armata japoneza in timpul celui de al II-lea Razboi Mondial. Compania a adoptat formal numele Mazda in 1984, chiar daca toate automobilele vindute pina atunci purtau numele Mazda. Primul automobil pe patru roti a fost Mazda R360 introdus in 1960, urmat de Mazda Carol in 1962.

Compania Ford a cumparat in 1979 25% din actiunile companiei Mazda, si a crescut cota acestora pina la 33.4% obtinind pachetul de control in 1996 cind Mazda a intrat intr-o criza financiara. Ford s-a bazat in multe din modelele sale pe cele de la Mazda, asa cum Probe, care au dat nastere Nord Americanului Ford Escort si Mercury Tracer, dar co-produsul Escape/Mazda Tribute.

1979 a pus calea pentru vanzarea marcilor Ford/Mazda Laser si Telstar in Asia si Australia. Aceste modele au inlocuit pe cele de la Ford Europe vandute pana in 1970. Ford, de asemenea, a folosit modele Mazda pentru a-si stabili prezenta in Japonia - Autorama dealers au vandut aceste modele dar si ocazional modele Ford americane si europene.

Anul 2000 vine cu sfarsitul rebranding-ului Ford inlocuind modelul Laser cu propriul Focus, iar Tlestar cu Mondeo.

In 2005, compania a vandut aproximativ 800 mii automobile in Japonia, Europa si SUA.
